Consumers spoke of an ‘off’ smell. The investigation led to this fruit drink’s recall

A mistake by a contract manufacturer caused Ocean Spray to recall one of its cranberry juice drinks.

Lot No. MH0030LPK4 of Pink Lite Cranberry Juice Drink, sold in six packs of 5 1/2-ounce cans with a best by date of 24JAN21, contains sulfites not declared by the ingredients label because they’re not supposed to be in the product. That is no problem for most people, but a serious problem for people with a sensitivity to sulfites, though they’re a common ingredient in food products.

According to the Ocean Spray-written, FDA-posted recall notice, the unnamed third-party manufacturer got “consumer complaints regarding an “off” odor in the identified lot.”

A check showed sulfites were added mistakenly to the recalled lot. No other lots or products are affected by the recall.

Consumers who wish to return the Pink Lite drink are asked to take a picture of the best by date, toss the product and send the photo to casupport@oceanspray.com. Those with questions can use that email address or call 800-662-3263, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Eastern time.
