Ready-to-eat packaged sandwiches recalled in 11 states after testing finds listeria

A positive listeria test led to the recall of Premo and Fresh Grab packaged ready-to-eat sandwich wedges in 11 states, Lipari Foods announced this week.

Lipari’s FDA-posted recall notice says it began shipping the sandwiches Dec. 31. The positive test was an environmental sampling by JLM Manufacturing.

The sandwiches went to Florida, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

This covers Egg Salad on Wheat, Chicken Salad on Wheat and Tuna Salad on Wheat sold under Premo and Fresh Grab brands; Fresh Grab’s Ham/American on White, Ham/American on Wheat and Turkey No Cheese on Wheat; and Premo’s Ham & Cheese on Wheat. All come from lot No. 31201912 with a best by date of 1/23/2020 (some of the Fresh Grab Egg Salad on Wheat sandwiches have a 1/20/2020 best by date).

Consumers should toss the sandwiches or return them for a refund. Anyone with questions should call Lipari at 800-729-3354, Monday through Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Eastern time.

Listeria hits 1,600 Americans a year, bringing fever, headache, stomachache, diarrhea and nausea. About 250 Americans die from listeria annually. Children under 5, senior citizens and those with damaged immune systems suffer the worst effects. Pregnant women can suffer miscarriages and stillbirths.
