Netflix Quietly Adds Disappointing Will Smith Drama

Netflix is adding a disappointing Will Smith drama next month that will give the movie a second chance.

Concussion was released in 2015 and featured Smith as Dr. Bennet Omalu, the neuropathologist and Nigerian immigrant who fought against the NFL to reveal a degenerative brain disease suffered by football players.

In 2002, Omalu performed an autopsy on Mike Webster, one of the Pittsburgh Steelers' most famous players. In the years before he died, Webster had struggled with mental illness and fallen into financial ruin.

A question of how an apparently healthy, favorite son of Pittsburgh could die in disgrace at 50 eventually led to Omalu's discover of the degenerative brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy, better known as CTE.

What Is Concussion, What Was Its Reception?

It's a dramatic thriller "based on the incredible true David vs. Goliath story of American immigrant Dr. Bennet Omalu, the brilliant forensic neuropathologist who made the first discovery of CTE, a football-related brain trauma, in a pro player and fought for the truth to be known," said Sony Pictures.

"Omalu's emotional quest puts him at dangerous odds with one of the most powerful – and beloved – institutions in the world."

The movie wasn't beloved by critics, who gave the film a paltry 58% on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans were a bit more kind with a 74% on the ratings platform and a similar 7.1 rating on iMDB.

Will Smith Wouldn't Let His Kids Play Football After Filming

After serving as Dr. Omalu, Smith admitted he wouldn't let his children play football if he had that decision to make.

"I thank God that that's a hypothetical question. As a parent, I'm all about information. So once he had all of the information, as a family we would sit down and discuss it. And then I would just make his mother tell him no," he joked to NPR.

The film is set to hit Netflix on June 1.
