Trailer for Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' Triggers Criticism From Fans

A new trailer for Christopher Nolan's recent film, The Odyssey, dropped to mixed reactions. While the trailer generated excitement, fans also voiced concerns, particularly about the dialogue and the actors' accents. Some even criticized the costumes for apparent historical inaccuracies.

Nolan's The Odyssey boasts a star-studded cast, including Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, and many others. A line that Pattison's character, Antinous, says has sparked the most criticism. In the trailer, he says, "You're pining for a daddy you didn't even know," which has people questioning the use of modern language. This bothered some viewers, who felt it was out of place.

However, fans were not only outspoken about the dialogue. One of the main complaints about the trailer was that all the actors spoke with American accents. Even Holland and Pattinson, who are British, spoke with American accents. Some viewers labeled the accent misplaced. This type of period piece often employs British accents to give them a certain dignity and poise without alienating English-speaking audiences. However, this is equally as historically inaccurate. Nolan, who is British himself and was knighted recently, has not spoken about the choice.

Besides the accents and dialogue, there were complaints about the historical inaccuracy of a couple of costumes. The helmet that Odysseus wears seems in line with Homer's depiction, but Agamemnon's is not. The dark helmet he dons was compared to "Batman with a hint of Warhammer" by one X user. Agamemnon would not be able to actually wear the impractical bronze helmet seen in the trailer into battle. Another complaint was that the Laestrygonians featured in the trailer appear to be wearing clean armor that looks almost medieval, not befitting the wild cannibals from Homer's story. It struck fans as strange that Nolan, who famously avoids CGI to preserve realism, would miss such details.

Opinions remain divided, however. While many believe a modern take does not fit the myth, others argue that Nolan's use of current colloquialisms makes the story more accessible. Supporting this, Nolan himself compared the original story of The Odyssey to modern-day superheroes during his appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Emily Wilson, who translated the story in 2017 into one of the most widely used versions today, claimed that Homer "didn't sound archaic to the Greeks."

This is not the first time Nolan has faced criticism after releasing trailers. Yet, time and time again, his films receive critical acclaim. While fans may not appreciate the modern language or American accents, audiences will have to wait until the movie is out. The Odyssey premieres July 17, 2026.
