HBO Makes Telling Decision on 'Harry Potter' Months Before Season 1

Typically, when a new show or series debuts, the network or streaming service will wait for ratings and the reception from viewers before greenlighting a second season. It's certainly not often that you see a second season announced months before the first season even airs, but some shows are unique.

HBO's Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the first season of the new series based on J.K. Rowling's books, will not air until December of this year. However, the show has already been renewed for a second season, which will cover the second book in the series, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Second Season Already Announced

While the first season of the new series is still months away, HBO has officially greenlit the second season of the show with plans to begin filming this fall.

Not only that, but HBO announced a move that should make the whole production process run a bit smoother, promoting Jon Brown, a writer on the first season of the adaptation, to co-showrunner for the second season of the show.

"As we have laid out our plans for the overlapping production schedules to finish Season 1 by Christmas and to return to production for Season 2 this autumn, it has become clear that bringing on a co-showrunner is the key to maintaining our momentum. I've loved working with Jon from the very first day we met on ‘Succession' through to these recent times together on ‘Harry Potter.' Not only do I have huge admiration for his writing, but he's also a brilliant collaborator and a lovely person. We are lucky to have him," current showrunner Francesca Gardiner said in a statement.

"I'm incredibly excited to be collaborating with Francesca as co-showrunner," Brown said in a statement. "It has been a joy to write on ‘Philosopher's Stone' and I'd like to thank Francesca and HBO for putting their faith in me to continue this remarkable journey. Seems you're never too old to get your invitation to Hogwarts."

A Telling Move

While it's not at all surprising that HBO has greenlit season 2 before the first season even airs, considering the network announced plans to do seven seasons of the show – one for each book in the series – it is telling about their commitment to the project.

While HBO obviously plans to adapt each book into its own season, other similarly ambitious projects have failed in the past. For example, Amazon recently canceled The Wheel of Time after just three seasons, covering nowhere near the 14-book series.

It would have been understandable if HBO had waited for the reception before publicly announcing plans to move forward with a second season, especially considering some of the criticism regarding the creative decisions made for the first season before it even aired.

However, by renewing the show before the first season even airs, HBO is demonstrating its commitment to the project, making it clear that it plans to move forward regardless of what the viewership numbers look like.
