25 Years Since 'Pine Barrens': The Sopranos Episode That Helped Redefine TV Comedy

Widely regarded as one of the greatest television shows of all time, The Sopranos has no shortage of memorable episodes. Countless outlets have ranked them over the years, with the same titles ("College," "Whitecaps," "Funhouse") often at or near the top of the lists.

Another favorite in those rankings, and perhaps the most iconic, episode of The Sopranos premiered on HBO 25 years ago tonight. On May 6, 2001, the world watched at Paulie Walnuts and Christopher botched a scheduled meeting with a Russian gangster and spent a long, cold night in New Jersey's Pine Barrens as a result.

All sorts of hilarity ensued, with many of the lines and scenes from "Pine Barrens" forever embedded in the minds of viewers. Over the last 25 years, the 11th installment of Season 3 has maintained its place in the pantheon of Sopranos episodes, and it won't be relinquishing it anytime soon.

'Pine Barrens': The debut of a classic

As the third season of The Sopranos winds down, we find Tony's extramarital relationship with car saleswoman Gloria Trillo heating up to unhealthy levels. Their combustibility is an important side plot in "Pine Barrens" and one of the focal points of the following episode, "Amour Fou."

However, "Pine Barrens" is largely Paulie and Christopher's show. The pair are assigned to collect money from Valery, a hulking Russian operative, on behalf of Silvio Dante, who is under the weather. When the meeting with Valery unravels into a wild brawl, Paulie and Chris kill the man and put his body in the trunk of their car.

At least, that's what they think. Upon arriving in South Jersey's Pine Barrens--the episode was actually filmed in New York State--the two men discover Valery is still alive. When they give the mysterious Russian a shovel to dig his own grave, Valery attacks them with it and takes off running, clad in only a t-shirt and pants in frigid weather.

Paulie and Chris fire gunshots at the fleeing Valery, with the former thinking he hit him. Valery gets away though, and soon the two bumbling mafiosos realize they are lost.

'Two a------s lost in the woods'

This is where the episode becomes unforgettable. Paulie and Christopher are forced to spend the night in the woods, taking shelter in an abandoned van and trying to sustain themselves on ketchup and relish packets.

Their bickering throughout this ordeal is legendary and makes for some of the most repeatable lines in Sopranos history. Eventually, the pair are rescued by Tony and Bobby Bacala, wearing his bright orange hunting vest.

A lasting legacy

Among hardcore Sopranos fans, there is a little bit of pushback against "Pine Barrens," given its ubiquity.

Still, you can't deny the amount of incredibly quotable lines ("He killed sixteen Czechoslovakians. The guy was an interior decorator,"/"F--k you, Paulie. Captain or no captain, right now, we're just two a------s lost in the woods") and funny moments.

Also, the episode, directed by Steve Buscemi, is dark comedy at its finest, which is an apt way to describe the HBO series as a whole. The banter between Paulie and Chris--along with the overall absurdity of that storyline--mixed with the disintegration of Tony and his daughter Meadow's respective romances with Gloria (man, she can throw some beef) and Jackie Aprile Jr. make for an hour of television that has left an indelible mark over the last 25 years.
