'Terrifying': New Report Reveals 'Grand Theft Auto 6' Key Development and Expectations Details

2026 is more like the year of Grand Theft Auto 6, feeling fans full of excitement, and video game publishers full of anxiety. It's been widely reported that GTA 6 is estimated to be the largest entertainment launch in history, so with that mighty expectation, it turns out that Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive may be feeling some of the pressure as the November release date inches ever closer.

In a new report from Bloomberg (paywalled), written by legendary video game journalist Jason Schreier, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has revealed the expectations are so high that it is "terrifying." Additionally, Schreier revealed more information about the game's development.

According to Schreier, Rockstar Games was given a virtually unlimited amount of money and resources to create GTA 6. Reportedly, GTA 6 will also be considered a failure if it only sells around 10 million units, which is exponentially more than any "normal" game release. Schreier notes that several video game industry analysts have forecasted the game to sell around 25 million or more copies on launch day. That high number creates high stakes for the release of the game.

Schreier also discussed the possibility that the game is not getting a PC version at launch, but a PC port will more likely happen in the coming years, likely to entice consumers to buy the game at least twice.

Rockstar has historically gone to console first to serve the core consumer, according to Zelnick.

Grand Theft Auto 5 was released and re-released several times since its initial launch in 2013, and, according to Take-Two Interactive, GTA 5 has sold more than 225 million units over the past 13 years, making it the second-best-selling video game of all time, behind Minecraft.

While GTA 6 will launch the same day and time on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, it is thought that there is a marketing deal in place between Sony and Take-Two, but that is likely not the reason for the PC version absence at launch.

Barring any future delays, Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
