Unlikely Giraffe and Zebra Friendship Has Visitors Doing Double Takes

At Wild Adventures Theme Park, an unexpected interspecies friendship is quietly stealing the spotlight.

Inside the park's Giraffe Overlook, a young zebra named Kurtsie and a gentle giraffe named Bakari have formed a bond that's as rare as it is heartwarming-often seen side by side, grooming, resting, and even sharing snacks. What began as simple curiosity has grown into a close companionship that animal care experts say goes beyond what's typically seen between species, giving visitors a moving glimpse into just how powerful friendship can be in the animal world.

How the Unlikely Animal Friendship Began

Bakari, a 7-year-old giraffe, has called the Georgia theme park home since he was just one year old. However, everything changed for the better when Wild Adventures opened the new and improved Giraffe Overlook, where giraffes and zebras could interact like they would in the wild.

Kurtsie was born in December 2023, just a few months after the two species' habitats combined. She was the first baby zebra to meet the giraffes up close, and the introduction couldn't have gone better.

"Kurtsie first entered the Giraffe yard just hours after she was born," explained Wild Adventures Animal Care Specialist, Sarah Plain, "and from day one, Bakari was very curious about her, often following her around the yard. This made her nervous at first, but as she got older, she began to return the affection."

The tides truly turned when Kurtsie turned 2-years-old. Typically, this is the age when young zebras would separate from their herd and begin adolescence on their own, and this was also the age when Kurtsie began showing much more interest in her unlikely animal friend.

Plain recalls, "She began spending more time with Bakari, often weaving around his legs as they walked the yard, and sharing snacks. She began accompanying him at giraffe feedings, where she would usually take a nap while Bakari enjoyed some snacks from our guests."

Visiting Kurtsie and Bakari

That's right-guests can get a glimpse of this unlikely animal friendship for themselves while visiting Wild Adventures Theme Park in Valdosta, Georgia. It can be easy to spot these BFFs when they're grooming one another or sharing a snack, but visitors can get an even closer glimpse by booking a giraffe feeding or encounter. Most of the time, wherever Bakari goes, Kurtsie follows!

That being said, these best friends aren't together 24 hours a day. The zebra enjoys meals with the rest of her herd, while Bakari also shares a special bond with the park's other giraffe, Bariki.

"To distinguish Bakari from our other giraffe Bariki," Plain explains, "just look for the lighter colored of the two. There is a super cool way to tell Kurstie apart from the rest of the herd, just look for the giraffe-shaped mark on her right shoulder!" (See below.)

Why This Interspecies Friendship Matters

These animal best friends are sure to make Wild Adventures visitors smile, but their bond is also important on a higher level.

"Giraffes and zebras often live together in the wild," says Plain. "By sticking together, they are safer from predators. But what we're seeing between Bakari and Kurtsie is certainly a deeper bond than what we would generally see in the wild."

As a result, both animals have grown and evolved in ways their care team never imagined. Bakari has always been an incredibly social animal, so having a best friend to spend time with is like a dream come true. Kurtsie, who was shy as a foal, has become much more social with her Animal Care team since bonding with the outgoing giraffe.
