BTS mania has officially taken over Tampa.

Fans have sold out not just the three concerts at Raymond James Stadium this weekend, but themed events around town.

The city shut down Tampa Bay Boulevard throughnext Wednesday to accommodate merch lines around the stadium.

There are welcome tables, a photo backdrop and pop-up dance performances at Tampa International Airport.

"People are coming here from all over the place," said Santiago Corrada, president and CEO of Visit Tampa Bay. "We're getting calls from Korean press about BTS being in Tampa. ... Now, there's a special place in Korea in their hearts for Tampa, because their beloved group performed here."

While member Jin headlined Benchmark International Arena last year, BTS has never performed as a group together in Florida. A 2020 concert was scheduled for Orlando, but was canceled due to the pandemic. Then each of the seven members had to complete mandatory military service back home in South Korea.

The band returned this year with its sixth album, "Arirang," and a world tour to go with it. The first three shows in North America - Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday - take place at RayJay.

Some 60,000 fans are expected to attend each night, according to a weekend traffic advisory posted by the city.

Celebrations began last week, starting with a deluge of local events from markets and meetups to a themed dinner cruise. Then Mayor Jane Castor popped up in social media videos announcing that she would light landmarks around Tampa purple - the band's color.

"It really is an incredible opportunity for the entire Tampa Bay region, and we're excited about that," Castor said, noting she had family flying in from Korea to attend.

While Hillsborough's tourism agency won't be able to measure the economic impact of the concerts for another week and a half, Corrada has heard anecdotally that "hotels are being inundated with reservations."

"That's a great indicator of what's going to happen," he said. "People who are traveling from out of the area, they're having to get a room in Hillsborough County, which means that exponentially they're going to spend there. They're going to spend on food and beverage. They're going to spend on entertainment. They're going to spend on souvenirs."

In 2023, Taylor Swift's three Eras Tour dates in Tampa brought in over $5 million for Raymond James Stadium alone.

"The first night, hotel occupancy, Hillsborough countywide, was 94.2%, and it was 25.7% higher than the same night year prior," Corrada said. "That means almost 9½ out of 10 rooms in Hillsborough County were occupied revenue."

For local K-pop fans, these concerts are long overdue.

"It was an enormous moment to see them announce for Tampa," said Yasmin Serrano, who owns a music shop called Kpop Nabi with her brother and mom in Citrus Park. "Usually groups go to Orlando or Atlanta, so it was out of the norm for a K-pop group to come here, and the fact that it's BTS is even bigger."

Serrano's family ordered "hundreds of albums and tons of merch" for this weekend. The free fan event they're hosting in Ybor City on Friday is already at capacity.

"It's a little nerve-wracking. We've definitely had to make huge preparations, because Army, the BTS fans, are some of the most passionate fans," said Serrano, who plans to attend the Tuesday concert. "They really care about all seven members, and they show their love through repping them. They're buying cute keychain plushies, or they're getting freebies before the concert."

It's not a bad time to join them. Serrano said her fellow fans have been making bracelets and homemade gifts to give out at tailgates before the show.

"We all love the music, but you get to learn the members' personalities and you get to trade photo cards with other fans," she said. "I always tell parents who come to the store and they have no idea what their kid is buying that there's probably a K-pop group out there for you."
