A 5-year-old husky mix named Missy had a different plan for her Monday morning. Despite not being scheduled for dog daycare at Spot’s Place in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, the energetic pup dug her way under the back gate and followed her usual route to get there on her own.

She arrived just before 11 a.m. — covered in mud and ready to play. Staff could hardly believe their eyes when they spotted her running loose in the parking lot, and a video of the solo adventure has since gone viral on TikTok.

How Missy Found Her Own Way to Doggy Daycare

Missy and her owner, Heath Hrappstead, normally bike to Spot’s Place together Monday through Friday. She knows the route well. But this particular Monday, Missy had a vet appointment and was staying home.

Hrappstead left for work without her that morning, and he knew Missy wasn’t a happy camper.

“I could tell from the whimper she was very upset with me that I decided to leave without her,” Hrappstead told CBC.

His partner later left Missy in the yard while she went to run errands. That’s when Missy made her move.

“She ended up getting a call [from Spot’s Place] because Missy had dug her way out under the back gate and ran and took herself to daycare,” Hrappstead said. “It sounded like she just followed the route that we normally take in the morning with the bicycle.”

How Staff Reacted to Missy’s Dramatic Entrance

Staff members at Spot’s Place saw Missy approaching the doors and let her in.

“We were basically like, ‘Oh my gosh, what are you doing here?!’” staff members said, per USA TODAY. “We couldn’t believe that she came on her own.”

Missy seemed to be in good spirits, not thinking anything was out of the ordinary.

“What stood out most was how she was just acting like it was a regular day,” they added. “She showed up like, ‘Hey guys, I’m here! Sorry I’m late!’”

After she arrived, staff called Hrappstead to pick her up. She eventually made it back home safely and was scheduled for daycare the next day.

Missy’s Best Friend Was Waiting Inside

Spot’s Place staffer Mackenzie Hoffman explained what it was like to see Missy show up unannounced, saying, “She was full of mud, obviously, because she had a little escape journey.”

Staff quickly realized Missy might have had extra motivation for her solo trip. Her best friend, a dog named Shaggy, was already at the daycare.

“So we’re like, ‘Perfect, she gets to see Shaggy.’ We’re like, ‘They probably want to see each other. She came all the way to see Shaggy,’” Hoffman said.

Missy and Shaggy attended Spot’s Place prom as a couple last year.

“They kind of hit it off right off the bat,” said Hoffman. “They do have other friends here, but they definitely gravitate to each other the most.”

“They just love each other,” Hoffman said. “Mom and dad on both sides are very aware of their relationship, and it’s no secret to them that Missy and Shaggy are best friends.”

Missy has been attending Spot’s Place for about four years. She started coming twice a week when she had a brother, but after he passed away, her family began bringing her every day to help with her grieving process.

“When I drop her off in the morning, they’re really good with her,” Hrappstead said. “She just shows up with her tail wagging … we call it butt-wagging because she’s wagging, but her butt’s moving too, and she’s so excited.”
