Kitten Doesn't Not Recognize Dog After Being Groomed, Hysterics at Response
A kitten's bristling confusion after failing to recognize the family dog post-grooming has left viewers online in hysterics, with a short, quietly comic clip of the moment racking up millions of views-and reminding viewers just how deeply animals rely on familiarity and scent.
The TikTok video, shared by the pet owner under @angelarosetv on April 17, has been viewed more than 3.2 million times and liked over 583,000 times, prompting an outpouring of amused reactions. The short clip features old footage of a Himalayan cat named Coco encountering her newly groomed canine housemate-and reacting as if she has come face to face with an intruder.
In the clip, Coco peers cautiously from behind a couch, her body puffed up and posture rigid. She looks wary, on edge, and visibly unsure of what-or who-is now sharing her living space. As the kitten slowly advances, she keeps her distance, eyes locked on the dog. The tension only escalates when the canine, seemingly oblivious, walks past her in an awkward, gentle way. Coco's fur fluffs up even more, her suspicion deepening rather than easing.
The moment's humor lies in the contrast between the kitten's rising alarm and the dog's calm, confused presence. The pup makes no unusual moves, responding instead with quiet awkwardness, as Coco tries to process the unfamiliar sight and smell in front of her.
The video was captioned, “Please enjoy these old videos of my Himalayan cat, Coco as a kitten,” while an overlaid text on the clip provided the punchline for viewers: “POV: [Point of view] Your dog got groomed and your cat doesn't recognize her.”
“It's the way he smells not the way he looks,” one commenter observed.
Another asked bluntly: “What did he look like before?”
Several users drew humorous parallels to human experiences.
“I went through the same thing when my husband shaved his mustache and beard. I slept at the edge of the bed facing away from him. Total stranger danger,” one viewer said.
Another added: “It's like when babies see their dads without beards for the first time.”
Others leaned into animal behavior explanations, suggesting Coco's reaction made sense.
“It's not really because of how she looks it's because she probably smells different. She probably has some smells of other people/pets on her,” one commenter said.
Another posted: “Poor cat-they have limited object permanence too.”
For some, the video landed on a more-emotional note.
“I just had a panic attack and your video made me smile and calm down. So I just came here to say thank you for making my day better,” one viewer shared.
But the phenomenon, it seems, is far from rare.
“My dog gets groomed every 8 weeks, my cat has known him her entire tiny life and still does this every single time he gets groomed,” one commenter said.
