Dad Leaves Clippers in Bathroom, Mom in Tears at What Toddler Does Next
A California mom was left devastated after her 2-year-old daughter got her hands on dad's clippers with brutal results.
In a video posted to TikTok under the handle @dianeesmith, Diane Smith from San Francisco shared footage of the fallout from what happened and the bizarre hairstyle her toddler was left with as a result.
A good haircut can make a real difference, whatever your age. A 2023 study published in the Open Journal of Social Sciencesfound that children identified "well‑groomed appearance" as one of the strongest markers of high self‑esteem, alongside family stability.
Conversely, a bad haircut can live long in the memory for all the wrong reasons. While Smith's daughter, Stevie, is probably too young and will likely forget about her own haircut mishap, her mom certainly won't.
It all started when Smith briefly turned her back on Stevie while she went for a quick shower. "When my daughter is awake I'll have her play in the sink next to the shower so I can watch her," Smith told Newsweek. "She usually just plays with her toys in the sink."
This time, there was an unwelcome addition to Stevie's bathroom sink play area: a set of clippers Smith's husband Rob had been using to shave his head. "I didn't even notice them but I guess he had left them there because they died on him the night before and weren't working," Smith said.
Smith realized Stevie had picked up the clippers a moment too late. "I kept checking on my daughter for about a five-minute shower," she said. "I then got out and noticed there was hair on her pacifier. I thought she grabbed my hair brush or something."
Stevie had only trimmed a small part of her hair off at that point. If Smith had realized what was going on then, she might have been able to stop what happened. However, she was still oblivious to the presence of the clippers. That would soon change though. "Then as I'm standing there, she grabbed the clippers and went straight down her head again," she said.
Suddenly, she realized the hair belonged to Stevie. Though she got the clippers away from her, the damage was done. "I looked next to the stool and tons of hair was lying on the ground," she said.
The video posted to TikTok captures the fallout, with Stevie sporting what essentially looks like a mohawk in reverse. Smith was devastated but was still able to see the funny side in it all-an important part of parenting in these situations. "I cried then laughed then cried some more," she said. "I guess one of the perks of having a bald dad is you know how to use hair clippers."
Stevie is due to turn 3 soon, meaning she'll be sporting her unusual hairstyle when she has the birthday party her parents have planned for her. Still, the pictures will be something they all look back on and laugh at. "We haven't been able to fix her hair but we are able to wear certain hairstyles or hats to cover it," she said.
Though it may have been stressful, Smith has learned a valuable lesson about keeping things out of reach of children."The clippers are on the top shelf of the closet, they will never be out again," she said.
