Man Proposes Without a Ring, Shock Over What He Does Instead: ‘Obsessed'

A marriage proposal without a ring usually raises eyebrows-but one man's unconventional approach has left the internet impressed after his partner revealed what he did instead.

In a post shared to the r/Gemstones subreddit, u/AssilemJA wrote that her boyfriend proposed not with a diamond, but with 100 pounds of sapphire gravel.

Newsweek reached out to u/AssilemJA via Reddit direct message.

"My boyfriend proposed with 100lbs of sapphire gravel," she wrote, alongside a photo showing dozens of rough, multicolored sapphires laid out after processing.

According to the poster, the gravel-sourced from Montana-wasn't just symbolic. It was meant to become her engagement ring.

After sorting through roughly 105 stones pulled from the gravel, the couple sent the sapphires off for heat treatment, a process used to enhance clarity and color. When the stones were returned several weeks later, the results exceeded expectations.

"I'm obsessed," she wrote, adding that 43 of the stones were gem quality. The largest weighed in at four carats.

At the time of writing, the post has received 11,000 upvotes.

Commenters were quick to ask practical questions-starting with the obvious one. "That's cool but 100lbs??" one user wrote. The poster clarified that it was 100 pounds of gravel, not gemstones, explaining that several sapphire mines in Montana ship unsearched gravel directly from the mine so customers can pan and sort through it at home.

Others wanted to know where the stones were treated. The poster said the couple took them to The Sapphire Gallery in Philipsburg, Montana, noting the process took just under three weeks. When asked where the gravel itself came from, she confirmed it was purchased from Gem Mountain in Philipsburg, which sells directly through its website.

While many users focused on logistics, others were struck by the romance of the gesture. One commenter described it as "very Arabian prince," saying they would be flattered by such an over-the-top proposal.

Many others saw the potential in the gem stones.

"Wow I can see a lovely 3-5 stone ring with a sapphire matching band," one said.

"It’d be incredibly cool, if they chose that, to do a ‘Sun, moon, & stars’ themed ring!" another added.

Rather than being handed a finished ring, the proposal gave her something more personal: the chance to choose.

Her next step, she explained, is narrowing the stones down and having four or five cut for a custom engagement ring. When asked if she had a favorite among the sapphires, she didn't hesitate. "The big one and orange so far!" she replied.
