Plane Passenger Pays For Seats-Stunned By Where They Actually Sit

A furious traveler says years of loyalty to Southwest Airlines came to an abrupt end after a seating experience that they claim left them separated from their companion, despite paying for assigned seats.

User No_Help1894 turned to Reddit to “rant” this week that they were placed in separate middle seats while other parts of the plane appeared to have empty rows, including exit rows and seats toward the back.

"Having entire exit rows empty and rows in the back empty, but then placing me and my companion in separate middle seats," the original poster (OP) wrote, fuming, "LMAO, I PAID FOR SELECTED SEATS!"

Seating Shift

The post reflects confusion over Southwest's evolving seating model, which has shifted from its long-standing open seating approach to a more structured assigned seating system.

According to information published by Southwest, "We're introducing seat options that allow you to choose the experience you prefer," including the ability to select seats and upgrade for extra legroom, as stated on the airline's website.

The OP's complaint stoked 1,600 questions and responses from other Reddit contributors within two days, some of whom sought clarification.

An individual asked, "You paid for your seats and you didn't sit in them? What happened?"

Another added: "If you paid to choose, what happened?"

Others suggested that seat changes can occur after booking. One commenter, identified as Ben_there_1977, wrote: "Southwest has a bad habit of booting people from seats they've paid for… someone else checks in and gets those seats and then the person that paid gets a middle."

The same commenter added that refunds are sometimes issued, saying the airline will, "normally refund the original fee if you got that seat because of a paid seat assignment."

New System

Southwest's own materials outline a tiered system for seating, with some fares allowing seat selection at booking and others assigning seats at check-in.

The airline states that, "new seat choices and assigned seating now bookable for travel January 27, 2026 and beyond," with options ranging from standard seats in the back to preferred and extra legroom seats closer to the front or exit rows.

The company also notes that all flights now operate with assigned seating, directing customers with issues to contact support or submit complaints through its help center.

For the Reddit user, the experience appears to have been enough to prompt a change in travel habits.

"Absolutely never again," they declared, adding that the situation made it easier "to choose a different airline."

The thread captures a moment of friction as the airline transitions to a new seating structure, with some passengers still adjusting to how seat assignments are handled and what guarantees come with paid selections.
