Meet the Porsche 911 GT3 S/C: A Manual Convertible with 502 HP and Quick-Deploy Roof

Meet the Porsche 911 GT3 S/C. It's a long way to say "GT3 convertible," but the model is here nonetheless. It fits in next to the GT3 Touring, offering a slightly less serious 911 GT3 that still feels worthy of the model's vaunted GT badge. The new GT3 S/C (Sport Cabriolet) is basically a 911 Speedster, but a bit more portly owing to its powered roof. Another critical distinction: Porsche's Speedster was limited to 1,948 units. The GT3 S/C will not be. The days of a convertible GT3 are here to stay.

Porsche says the aforementioned ragtop is easily operated with a single touch, taking just 12 seconds to go up or down, provided you don't exceed 31 miles per hour. The model also features an interesting powered wind deflector that deploys in just two seconds. All told, the associated powered roof and its workings make the GT3 S/C around 66 pounds heavier than the Speedster, tipping the scales at 3,322 pounds. It's one of the lighter 911s out there, and Porsche made use of lightweight carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic for the hood, fenders, doors, connecting links, underbody panel, and rear sway bar. You can drop a few more pounds by opting for folding bucket seats, though they'll surely cost a pretty penny. Further weight is saved by eliminating the rear seats in favor of a cargo storage box.

Like its coupe sibling, the S/C incorporates the GT3's double-wishbone suspension setup at the front axle and, more importantly, its 4.0-liter flat-six. Power comes out to 502 horsepower and 331 pound-feet of torque, just like the GT3. Unlike the GT3, the only choice in transmission is a six-speed manual. It's quite a bit cheaper than the coupe, too, coming in at $275,350 including destination compared to the GT3's $308,000+ sticker when optioned with a manual.
