Getting a new dog, or fur baby as many experienced pet parents like to call them, is an exciting moment for anyone looking to expand their family. Dogs as a species are known to be loyal, loving, and affectionate; they're always happy to see their parents at the end of the day, and the loving look they give them every time they greet them is often enough to melt anyone's heart.

However, as exciting as the prospect of taking home a new fur baby might be, the process of picking the right dog for their lifestyle can still be overwhelming for a first-time pet parent. With so many dog breeds out there, how can a first-time pet parent know which breed is right for them?

According to a study by MetLife Pet Insurance, there is one breed in particular that stands above the rest as being the best overall fit for first-time pet parents due to their loyal and loving temperament: the Golden Retriever.

Golden Retrievers are renowned for their lovable, easy-going personalities. They are people pleasers, plain and simple. They are easily trainable and typically get along splendidly with humans of all ages and even other animals, regardless of their species.

As their name suggests, Golden Retrievers are also gorgeous dogs, thanks to their infectious smiles, floppy ears, and beautiful golden coats. As with any dog, Golden Retrievers come with their fair share of responsibility for families and pet parents, though.

They can be very energetic dogs and thus require regular exercise on a daily basis so that they don't become destructive around the house. However, that doesn't mean that pet parents need to run a marathon with their golden boy or girl every day. Simply going for a daily walk or taking a trip to the dog park will suffice.

Their above-mentioned golden coats will also require regular attention because these dogs are known to shed frequently. It's a good idea to brush them outdoors, because it's easy for large clumps of their golden fur to get everywhere.

But those things aside, Golden Retrievers are such easy-going, loyal, and loving dogs that they will seamlessly fit right in to any family or lifestyle. And their playful, often goofy, personalities will never fail to brighten their parents' day!
