One of the best parts of a road trip is random encounters, human and animal alike. You might spot a rare bird or a particularly majestic deer far away and marvel at the wildlife of the nation. But of course, animal traffic can also cause problems. A small Connecticut town recently had issues with a "jaywalking turkey" who seems to fit the bill for animal interlopers.

West Hartford Animal Control had to alert any locals or travelers in the area to the birdie's presence. As News 8 explained it, "The turkey often ignores traffic signals, walks like it owns the roadway, and has no concern for rush-hour traffic, according to the department." Well, that's a problem.

Fox 61 took us on location, and you can clearly see that this isn't a sleepy part of town. West Hartford Animal Control added that: "At this point, we're pretty sure it's not lost… It's just committed to chaos." The birds are out of control in Connecticut, apparently. I was born about 20 minutes away from West Hartford, so this story definitely hits close to home.

The West Hartford Animal Control Facebook page offered a few more points on our feathered friend:

  • This turkey has officially appointed itself Director of Traffic Flow… with zero training and full confidence.
  • It appears to be conducting random "driver patience tests" during peak hours.
  • If you think you have the right of way… think again. The turkey disagrees.
  • We cannot confirm, but it may be working on issuing citations for "excessive honking."
  • Several motorists report being stared down, like they just failed a background check.

So what do you do if you spot a wild animal in the roadway? We have a few tips.

How To Handle a Wildlife Encounter From the Road

These aren't the only circumstances under which you might happen upon an animal. Sometimes you could see a beastie who's been injured or a pet who's lost. One of the most important things to remember is not to put yourself or any other humans on the road in danger. Don't swerve unsafely to miss anything if you will hit another car in the process.

If you can pull over, stay mindful of the animal's mood. When hurt, even a docile creature might bite, which could even give you rabies, depending on the species. Call animal control or 911 as soon as possible for help and further instructions.

In this case, the post went on to explain that drivers should use caution in the area, leave the bird alone, and never chase this turkey.
