'Pay or Leak': 'Grand Theft Auto 6' Developers Hit With a Data Breach; Ransom Demanded
Grand Theft Auto 6 is widely considered to be one of the most anticipated entertainment launches in history. With reassurance from developer Rockstar Games and parent company Take-Two Interactive that the game will still release in November this year, excitement is growing. Still, there's something else, too: the threat of leaks. Now, Rockstar has been hit by a data breach.
Speaking to IGN, Rockstar Games released a statement to the outlet that confirmed there was indeed a recent data breach, but also insists that the incident has "no impact on our organization or our players."
The full statement read, "We can confirm that a limited amount of non-material company information was accessed in connection with a third-party data breach. This incident has no impact on our organization or our players."
The Cybersec Guru reported that a group called ShinyHunters had used the AI platform Anodot, which is used internally by Rockstar Games, to bypass Rockstar Games' security measures. ShinyHunters then issued a threat and a ransom, demanding an undisclosed sum of money in exchange for not leaking the obtained information.
ShinyHunters' full threat read, "Rockstar Games, your Snowflake instances were compromised thanks to Anodot.com. Pay or leak. This is a final warning to reach out by 14 Apr 2026 before we leak along with several annoying (digital) problems that'll come your way. Make the right decision. Don't be the next headline. FINAL WARNING: PAY OR LEAK."
Rockstar is insisting that no crucial information was stolen from employees or players, but Rockstar has been the subject of several data attacks and attempted data attacks. Back in 2022, early footage of GTA 6 was leaked online.
Besides the statement released to IGN, Rockstar Games has kept quiet on the matter and seems to be relatively unbothered by the threats.
Grand Theft Auto 6 will release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. A PC version is rumored to be in development for a February 2027 release.
