18-Year-Old Gout Gout Breaks 200 Meter Record
Australian Gout Gout added to his lore this weekend with a record breaking 200 meter run at the National Championships in his home country. His 19.67 second time broke the national record and is the new U-20 world record.
Gout got off to a solid start, but it wasn't a runaway victory. Aiden Murphy also impressed with a sub-20 second time, and pushed Gout to his limit. In the end, the prodigy pulled away and secured the win with a strong finish.
For context, this run would have won the bronze medal at the previous Olympics. It is also the 16th best 200 meter run of all time. Did we mention he's only 18?
The teenage sensation is trending ahead of legendary sprinters like Usain Bolt at the same age. Of course progress is not linear, but Gout is living up to the hype thus far. Ironically, he is relatively inexperienced compared to his peers, and runs a limited race schedule.
One of the biggest pitfalls with young, talented athletes is being pushed too hard. This can lead to burnout, and losing passion for the sport they used to love. It becomes a job more than an activity. Gout and his coaches seem to have a measured approach to his sprinting career. As a teenager, his body is still developing, and they don't want to put too much on him.
With that said, the 2028 Olympics just got more exciting. Sprinting events always draw a great deal of attention, but there has not been a real face of the sport since the aforementioned Bolt. Gout is a young, charismatic athlete that could grab the torch.
If his team continues with the patient, deliberate approach that has gotten him here, the world may be watching the next great sprinter take his throne in Los Angeles in 2028.
