An ‘organic’ product is recalled in 13 states and Canada after positive listeria test
A positive test for listeria has led to Inspired Organics’ recall of one lot of Organic Sunflower Butter that went to 13 states and the Canadian province of Ontario.
According to the company-written, FDA-posted recall notice, testing by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development found listeria in the product. So, Inspired Organics yanked lot No. 99 with a best by date of 10/2019 that was distributed by Lipari Foods to Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Ontario province.
Anyone with these 16-ounce jars should toss them or return them to the store for a full refund. Those with questions can call Inspired Organics at 800-729-3354 Monday through Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Eastern time.
Far less common than salmonella, listeria is also far more deadly, killing around 260 of the 1,600 Americans it hits each year, the Centers for Disease Control says. Listeriosis can cause miscarriages or stillbirths. Pregnant women, senior citizens, newborns and people with damaged immune systems are most vulnerable to the worst of listeria.
