Churchill’s Pub in Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood to reopen

As one legendary Miami music spot announces it’s closing, another is coming back to life.

Churchill’s Pub, the dive bar and underground music mecca that opened in 1979 and became home to Miami’s punk and hardcore scene, is finally reopening, not with a whisper but with what we assume will be a primal scream.

The gritty, often ear-splitting venue closed in 2020, plagued by the COVID pandemic and a nasty and complicated eviction battle. There have been rumors of its revival but until now no concrete information on reopening.

That all changes on Friday, Sept. 5, according to a press release sent by David Siqueiros, Churchill’s director of media and communications. The doors will reopen at 8:30 p.m., with a first come, first served rule. There’s no cover charge, but getting there early is probably a good idea.

The new press release appears to tout that same unflagging punk ethos.

“This reopening is the revenant of Miami’s underground spirit,” it said. “Churchill’s Pub has always belonged to the artists, the audience and the community. We are here to give it back, unpolished and unapologetic.”

Churchill’s also insists this isn’t a one-time night of performances but the start of a series of monthly showcases, goth and experimental nights and programming that ranges to different (but as yet unidentified) genres and subcultures.

Does the reopening indicate that the legal battle between owner Mallory Kauderer and the bar’s former manager, Franklin Dale, has ended? That is unclear.

There’s also no word on whether the bathrooms will maintain their post-apocalyptic charm, but you can always hope.

The news of the opening comes as another famous music spot in Miami announced its closing. On Thursday, owner Adam Gersten took to social media to announce that Gramps Wynwood would be closing at the end of the year..
