‘RIP to Wynwood’: After 13 years, this beloved bar and music spot is closing
Gramps in Wynwood is many things to the people of Miami. A place for cold beer and cold cocktails, like the favorite and unforgettable Rosemary’s Baby.
It offered a stage for the sorts of bands music lovers are unlikely to see anywhere else in Miami. It was home to the most necessary pizzas on the planet (especially after all those cold beers and cocktails). A reminder of an older, different Wynwood, one where you might’ve gotten a little nervous if you parked too far away after dark, but pretense was in such short supply you were willing to risk it.
But now, after 13 years of karaoke and live shows, drag and sports gatherings, of overall simple fun, the spot so many call the last good bar in Wynwood is closing.
Owner and native Miamian Adam Gersten announced the news on social media, stressing that “We’re leaving on our terms — it’s our choice.”
“I’ve been able to make this decision thoughtfully, and leave when it feels right. The time to leave Wynwood has come,” he wrote. “Unlike most folks, I’ve been blessed with a great landlord and a great broker — thirteen years later, I’m still working with Ari Dispenza, of Central Commercial Realty — the same guy that got me into the space.”
Gersten went on to thank every guest and everyone who ever worked at Gramps, urging every band who ever played there to return for a farewell engagement and telling everyone to come back for one last drink and slice.
He did add “But you should’ve come here more!” at the end of his video, a painful reminder that if you don’t support your local favorites, they can easily slip away, especially in a rapidly gentrifying neighborhood.
Social media reaction to the news reflected reports of shock and broken hearts, with responses ranging from “This is devastating” to “This is my 9/11.” One poster on Instagram wrote: “The last piece of what made Wynwood special is gone” while another simply wrote “RIP to Wynwood.”
Located at 176 NW 24th St. Gramps will remain open through the end of the year and close in 2026. In the meantime, Gramps Getaway at Rickenbacker Marina remains open, and Gersten wants your memories of the good times or even the not-so-good times there; you can email them to 13@gramps.com. You can also pre-order commemorative closing T shirts at gramps.com.
