Harry Styles announced a private concert. ‘Survivors’ of his Miami show want an invite
The good news: Harry Styles is giving a free concert.
The bad news: There’s a good likelihood you can’t go.
On Monday morning, SiriusXM announced that the former One Direction member will perform Feb. 28 at “a secret location” in New York City.
Translation: No gate crashers allowed. You couldn’t even buy a ticket if you wanted one.
The “intimate set” is exclusively for SiriusXM subscribers and will feature Styles performing songs from his recent sophomore album, “Fine Line,” according to a release.
Sounds great for a select few.
But many fans who traveled to Miami over Super Bowl weekend to see Styles play at the Planet Pepsi Zero Sugar concert, only to have the show canceled due to severe weather, are still reeling.
Recap: Styles was to about to take the stage the evening of Jan. 31, after Lizzo and DJ Mark Ronson performed at the Meridian entertainment pop-up stage on Watson Island. But suddenly a sign flashed saying everyone had to exit due to the heavy rainstorm.
Many who were left stranded on the island, with no water, bathrooms or access to the mainland (Uber was either not reachable or was price surging), are still angry that Pepsi hadn’t reached out to compensate them. Ticketmaster offered refunds, but the fans want more.
Hours after the canceled show and subsequent soggy debacle, the soda company released a statement: “For all attendees of tonight’s Planet Pepsi Zero Sugar Party, we understand this is disappointing, and want to do what we can to make this right. We are offering a full refund for tonight’s show and for your ride share from the venue. Details coming soon.”
So, no this concert is certainly not a redo of his disastrous non-set in the Magic City.
Pepsi did not respond to the Miami Herald’s most recent request for comment about how the people would be compensated for their travel, including ride shares and taxi fares.
So, how “soon” is soon? The people are waiting, and not too patiently, a week and a half after the fact. By the sounds of it, most would be happy just to see Styles in the flesh.
After the Sirius concert announcement, Twitter was fuming, as if their wounds from that night were reopened.
“People who went to the Miami show should get a hand delivered invitation I swear,” posted one disgruntled social media user with the handle @soyouwaitforme.
“I would like this invitation hand delivered by Harry himself,” cracked Twitter user @soyouwaitforme.
“Invite us miami show survivors PLEASE,” begged @hgoldens.
Y’all, Pepsi did NOTHING. The Meridian? Did NOTHING,” read a rant from @uFlower_uFeast_. “They don’t CARE. This got no media coverage so they don’t have to care because it’s not affecting them AT ALL. They didn’t reschedule, they didn’t give us the money back for Uber, they did NOTHING. I have the right to be mad.”
Concertgoer Angelina Grosso who drove from Tallahassee told the Miami Herald that she was refunded by Ticketmaster for her ticket to see Styles, but that doesn’t make up for “the terrible” and “traumatizing” experience.
Fans can see Harry’s NYC concert online at SiriusXM Hits1 at 6 p.m. Feb. 29.
