Miami Lighthouse for the Blind’s subsidiary, the Florida Heiken Children’s Vision Program, has been chosen as an All-Star Game Legacy Project of Major League Baseball.
Legacy funding will go toward a new mobile optometric unit, replacing an outdated, 14-year-old vehicle that has been in constant need of repair. The new unit, which will be unveiled during MLB All-Star Week in July in Miami, will allow Miami Lighthouse to expand their much needed services of free eye examinations with dilation and glasses for eligible schoolchildren.
Design artwork on the new mobile unit will be made public on Wednesday, May 24 from 6-8:30 p.m. at Music Under the Stars: Bon Appétit Brickell City Centre, a fundraiser for the Heiken Program. Occurring at the new Brickell City Centre, the event promises to be a night to remember filled with fine wine, great cuisine and special musical performances.
Guests will also enjoy a fabulous silent auction and raffle throughout the evening featuring exciting getaways, spa packages, and gift certificates from Brickell City Centre retailers. Sponsors for the event include ABB Optical Group, Publix Super Markets Charities, Marlins Foundation, Essilor Laboratories of America, BB&T Bank, Genesis Systems Consulting, GrayRobinson, H. Angela Whitman Foundation, Brickell City Centre and Susan Conroy Design.
Never miss a local story.
Miami Lighthouse’s Heiken Children’s Vision Program provides free comprehensive eye examinations and glasses when prescribed to low-income schoolchildren who fail their state-mandated school vision screening and have no insurance or other resources for eye care. Since the program’s inception in 1992, nearly 111,000 children have received exams, with 80% requiring glasses.
Brickell City Centre is at 701 South Miami Ave. Donation is $75 per ticket. Space is limited. Confirm if attending by calling 786-362-7515.
Major League Baseball and the Miami Marlins will donate $5 million to Greater Miami and beyond through the 2017 All-Star Legacy Initiative.
MLB All-Star Week in Miami is July 6-11, culminating with the MLB All-Star Game on Tuesday, July 11 at Marlins Park, home of the Marlins.
