Jay Ajayi is supposed to be the Dolphins' starting running back.
But on the first padded practice of the year, Ajayi was nothing but a spectator.
Ajayi missed practice Monday with a bone bruise to his left knee. He only expects to miss a couple of days of practice.
“Yesterday I just kind of extended my left knee and they checked it out,” Ajayi said after practice. “It was just a bone bruise. Just some swelling in there right now. Just got to ice it down. Once the swelling goes down, I'll be fine.”
Never miss a local story.
Ajayi spent the early part of practice on the exercise bike next to Dion Jordan and Damien Williams, both of whom are rehabbing.
Here's why the Ajayi development is a bit alarming: Ajayi had chronic knee issues in college, with a lack of cartilage in the joint.
That was to his right knee. The latest issue was to his left.
Isiah Pead got work with the starters in Ajayi’s absence, but left with an unspecified injury. As for Damien Williams, Adam Gase expects the running back to come off the physically unable to perform list in the next day or two.
Meanwhile, Matt Moore did not practice Monday. He was given a rest day off.
