Meet UM’s cool, calm ACC football Players of the Week
Kicker Michael Badgley will soon become the University of Miami’s all-time field goal leader.
In the past two weeks, receiver Darrell Langham has become a household name in South Florida – and around the nation.
Both UM players were honored Monday as Atlantic Coast Conference Players of the Week – Langham as a “co-receiver’’ and Badgley as the “specialist.’’
Badgley, a 5-10, 178-pound senior from Summit, N.J., kicked four field goals, including the 24-yard game-winner with four seconds remaining, in UM’s 25-24 victory over Georgia Tech.
His other field goals were 33, 32 and 21 yards.
“I was ready to go for the 65-yarder or whatever it was,’’ Badgley said Saturday after the game, referring to the Canes being penalized and set back to the Georgia Tech 44-yard-line with about a minute remaining. “But instead, Langham makes a heck of a play. Heck of a throw from Malik [Rosier]. And we get down.
“I get a point and nod from the coaches saying we’re going to center the ball, let’s go, time’s ticking down…I just wanted to do my job and win this game.
“So, it was fun.’’
Badgley, a friendly, no-worry type young man whose mullet hair style defies what’s cool, has now made 69 career field goals and trails only Carlos Huerta (1988-91), Miami’s all-time leader with 73.
And while we’re at it, let’s give some credit to snapper Jordan Butler and holder Jack Spicer.
“You know how that goes,’’ UM coach Mark Richt told WQAM on Monday. “No one knows the holder’s name unless he drops the ball on the last play of the game. So I want to give the guy props. I want everybody to know…’’
Langham, a 6-4, 220-pound redshirt junior from Lantana, caught the 28-yard pass on fourth-and-10 in Miami’s final drive that set up Badgley’s winning kick. He had a career-high 100 yards receiving on five catches.
Langham also was the hero against Florida State the previous week, catching the game-winning touchdown with six seconds left.
“Coach always tells us to be prepared and leave it on the field,’’ Langham said Saturday night.
The man with whom Langham shares this week’s ACC honor is Syracuse’s Ervin Phillips, who will face UM with his teammates at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium (ESPN).
Phillips, 5-11 and 181 pounds, had four catches for a game-high 94 yards and touchdown Saturday in Syracuse’s 27-24 upset over defending national champion and then-No. 2 Clemson.
