Miami senior Braxton Berrios, who led the Hurricanes with eight catches for 90 yards and two touchdowns in UM’s 24-20 victory at Florida State on Saturday, was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Receiver of the Week on Monday.
Berrios was a key player in UM’s victory, scoring a 21-yard touchdown on a pass from Malik Rosier with 6:57 left in the third quarter to put UM up 10-3, then a 6-yard touchdown with 5:09 left in the game to put UM up 17-13.
He also had a career-long 44-yard punt return that preceded his 21-yard touchdown.
“He was pretty amazing, what he did,’’ UM coach Mark Richt said of Berrios during his weekly radio stint Monday on WQAM. “There are so many things he did.
“The punt return, he had to be gassed a little bit. The very next play we throw the first touchdown pass of the game to him. ...[And] that last drive. He had actually caught a beautiful pass on the sideline. It got knocked out of bounds. [Rosier] threw the ball a little bit late. So, he gets knocked into the bench and has got to run back up there. Now it’s third-and-10 and he’s the one that ends up catching the ball to keep it going early in the drive...
“He was amazing. He practices that way every day. He leads that way. He’s been awesome. I’m just happy for the guy…”
Berrios, who also is UM’s most accomplished student in the classroom, became the first Hurricane since Reggie Wayne in 2000 to catch a touchdown pass in each of the first four games of the season. He now leads No. 11 UM (4-0, 2-0 ACC) with 282 yards and five touchdowns on 18 catches, a 15.7-yard average per catch.
The Hurricanes will host ACC Coastal Division rival Georgia Tech (3-1, 2-0) at 3:30 p.m. Saturday on ABC.
