QB decision on tap as Rosier and Shirreffs excel in UM scrimmage

The second fall scrimmage, closed to the media and public, is over.

University of Miami coach Mark Richt said Saturday that he will likely announce his starting quarterback by Tuesday.

He said the No. 1 offense had a very good day Saturday.

It’s pretty obvious it will be between Malik Rosier and Evan Shirreffs, with Rosier seemingly the frontrunner. Either way, it appears close. Both veterans shared first-team reps today and apparently, despite one pick apiece, both had very good days.

You can effectively take out freshman Cade Weldon from this starting race, and it appears that you can even take out freshman Perry as well. Despite Perry possibly being the future, he needs more time to adjust to college ball and this offense. Pretty sure he’ll be used in one way or another this season, if not sooner than later.

“I’m closer,’’ Richt said of naming a starter. “I’ll watch film again. We’re about to watch it with the staff. We’ll watch it with the players today. Monday, Tuesday more than likely... By Tuesday I’ll have made up my mind. Whether or not I announce anything I don’t know. But more than likely I will by Tuesday.’’

The news: Ahmmon Richards has a pulled hamstring, Richt said. He must have sustained the injury before the scrimmage. He was on a conditioning bike the last two days of practice.

Before I write my story, here are the quarterback scrimmage statistics that Richt just read off to us:

Rosier: 17 completions in 25 attempts for 260 yards, 2 TDs and an interception (Richt: “He got hit as he was throwing the one pick.’’)

Shirreffs: 13 of 19 for 227 yards, 2 TDs and an interception (”His was a deep ball that he gave the defender a better chance than the offensive player.”)

Perry: 6 of 12 for 88 yards and a touchdown.

Weldon: 1 of 5 for 11 (”Weldon went mainly with the [third-team] unit.”)
