Miami sunbathers scraped and bruised after getting run over by a parks truck
Three Crandon Beach sun soakers run over by a Miami-Dade Parks pickup truck were Miami-Dade residents.
Miami-Dade police released the names of the driver and victims on Saturday. Vicky Merlett, 20, William Merlett, 16, and Aurelien Bouaniche, 19, from South Miami-Dade’s Calusa area, suffered scrapes and bruises to their legs and feet in the late Friday afternoon incident, police said.
A driver identified as 23-year-old Kevin Gonzalez rolled a Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Ford F-150 pickup truck over the three as they lay on Crandon Beach. Gonzalez stopped immediately and called Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
He told police he didn’t see the three sunbathers.
There’s no record that Gonzalez has been cited or charged.
Despite work vehicles and sunbathers sharing the beach, the meeting of the two are rare.
Nearly five years ago on Hollywood beach, a man was run over by a city pickup truck and suffered cuts. In 2011, a Miami Beach police officer on an ATV ran over tourists on the sand. And in 2003, a Miami Beach officer in an SUV ran over two sisters from France sunbathing on the beach. One of the women died.
