At speeds of up to 140 miles per hour, Formula E cars will speed up and down Biscayne Boulevard, hug corners on 18-inch tires around the AmericanAirlines Arena, and zoom beneath the MacArthur Causeway. And they’ll do it without guzzling one gallon of gasoline.
Miami leaders and the CEO of Formula E Holdings on Monday announced the race track for the city’s first electric-car race, a sign that the city is inching closer to the 2015 FIA Formula E Miami ePRIX, planned for March 14 in downtown Miami. The event is three years in the making, and is the fifth stop on an 11-city circuit from Beijing to London.
“Two-and-a-half years ago we came to Miami with an idea. We didn’t have cars. We didn’t have teams. We didn’t have drivers,” said Alejandro Agag, CEO of Formula E Holdings.
The entire race includes 30 laps, eight turns and 11 drivers, riding in The Spark-Renault SRT_01E, a zero-emission electric race car built by French company Spark Racing Technology.

The course begins in the southbound lanes of Biscayne Boulevard between Northeast Seventh and Eighth streets. The cars head north to 11th Street, west to Northeast Second Avenue, and then loop around the Interstate 395 overpass and head back down Biscayne Boulevard toward the arena. They loop around Parcel B and then tear down Sixth Street and back onto the boulevard.
Miami City Manager Daniel Alfonso said a contract between the race host and various local agencies, including the city, Florida Department of Education and AmericanAirlines Arena, is still in the works. But he said the organizers of the race are paying for the cost of holding the weekend event, which will include test drives but will only result in one day of street closures and detours.
