Here's an early look at a possible downtown circuit for Formula One Miami Grand Prix
A potential circuit for a Formula One street race through downtown Miami has emerged.
As Miami commissioners consider entering into formal negotiations to bring a three-day Grand Prix race to downtown with Formula One, the preeminent international auto racing league, an early draft of a possible 2.57 mile track for the proposed street race was shared on social media Thursday by Commissioner Ken Russell.
The route begins on Biscayne Boulevard in front of the AmericanAirlines Arena and travels south until about Northeast Third Street. There it turns east and runs along the driveway leading up to Bayside Marketplace, where it curves north and back on Biscayne. From there, drivers would head north and turn onto the Port Boulevard, across the bridge. They would turn around near Seafarer's Park, looping around the arena before finishing on the Boulevard.
"Most of course is in the port with a loop around AAArena. Would you like to see #miami become a stop on the Formula One circuit?" Russell said in a tweet. Russell represents the district that covers downtown Miami.
On Thursday, commissioners are scheduled to vote on whether to direct Miami City Manager Emilio Gonzalez to hash out a contract with Formula One to host a downtown street race for the next 10 years. With the commission's blessing — which seems likely because the resolution is sponsored by three of five commissioners — Gonzalez would have until July 1 to negotiate a contract. A final deal would still require commission approval later in the summer.
