Miami man dies after his SUV veers off the Don Shula Expressway

A Miami man died Sunday after his SUV veered off the Don Shula Expressway and crashed into a fence and a tree, officials said.

Just after 5 a.m., Charles Richard Howard, 24, was driving south in his 1994 Ford Explorer on the entrance ramp of the Don Shula Expressway from Bird Road in the right lane. For an unknown reason, he veered to the right, into the grass. He then hit a chain-link fence and a tree, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Howard was not wearing a seat belt, according to the report. A passing driver pulled Howard from the car before it caught fire.

Howard died on the way to the hospital.
