He crashed his car and called his dad for help. When he showed up, they both died.
When Cesar Eduardo Cepeda crashed into a guardrail on the highway Friday morning, he called his dad for help.
Florida Highway Patrol officials say it was just around 5 a.m. when Cepeda, 34, lost control of his pickup truck near a northbound ramp to 836 and slammed into the railing. The impact caused his Chevy Silverado to spin off into a grassy area off the shoulder.
Cepeda managed to get out of the car and called his father, Jose Eduardo Cepeda Luna. Luna, 57, didn’t hesitate to come help his son quickly, officials say.
That’s when both men — who were standing outside their cars — were run over by a hit-and-run driver in a 2014 Chevrolet Camaro, according to the crash report. After the driver of the Camaro hit the pedestrians, the occupants in the Camaro jumped out of the car and took off in Luna’s Chevy Equinox.
Both father and son were pronounced dead, said FHP Lt. Alex Camacho.
The Equinox was later found abandoned near Homestead. Camacho says investigators are searching for the driver.
