The coat hooks in some women’s restrooms had eyes. Little video camera eyes. Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies believe they know who gave the hooks their vision.
Now, they want to find him.
They’re looking for 36-year-old Homestead resident Charles Schmidt, who might be on the run with his 27-year-old girlfriend, Shelly Arnold. What he’s running from — 14 counts of video voyeurism with a victim 19 years old or older and two counts of video voyeurism with a victim 16 or under.
Last May, cameras were found in women’s restroom stall coat hooks at Anne’s Beach in Islamorada, a Key Largo Circle K and Harry Harris Park in Tavernier. The videos inside the cameras showed women putting the restroom stalls to use.
But the videos also contained what detectives believed to be a test video that included a man’s arm with a distinctive tattoo. The Circle K surveillance cameras spotted a man with the same tattoo entering the women’s restroom while wearing a T-shirt for Affordable Asphalt. A trip to the business, the sheriff’s office says, identified the man as Schmidt.
Another test video was of a young girl in what appeared to be in a travel trailer. Schmidt lives in a travel trailer. Monroe County sheriff’s detectives tracked down the girl, whose mother said her daughter is tight with Schmidt’s children.
So tight, in fact, that the girl has gone to the Keys with Schmidt and his kids in the trailer.
