The University of Miami Health System’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute was named the nation’s best in ophthalmology for the 14th consecutive year by U.S. News & World Report magazine, which published its annual hospital rankings Tuesday.
Baptist Hospital Miami was rated No. 1 among 64 hospitals in South Florida, according to the magazine, which arrives at its rankings through an analysis of Medicare hospitalization data, physician surveys, patient safety scores and other information.
This year, the magazine adjusted its methodology to account for patient socioeconomic status, hospital volumes and an expanded definition of transfer cases that rewards hospitals for taking on higher-risk patients.
Cleveland Clinic Florida in Weston was rated the region’s second best hospital, followed by Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, which ranked third. University of Miami Hospital in Miami, and Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood ranked fourth and fifth, respectively.
Never miss a local story.
Eduardo C. Alfonso, a physician and chairman of Bascom Palmer, credited the specialty hospital’s team of 1,200 doctors, scientists, nurses, ophthalmic technicians and support staff for the medical facility’s consistent national excellence.
“Ensuring personalized, exceptional care for each of our patients is our priority,” Alfonso said in a written statement. “The fact that ophthalmologists from around the country recognize us as the best in the nation again and again is a great honor.”
Four Baptist Health South Florida hospitals ranked in the top 12 for the region, including South Miami and West Kendall Baptist hospitals, which tied for sixth place, and Homestead Hospital, which rated ninth.
