If you crave super-fast speeds for surfing the Internet, chances are you can soon catch the wave of service expanding throughout South Florida.

Atlantic Broadband is the latest cable operator to announce the widespread availability of its Gigabit internet service. Effective Tuesday, both GigaEdge for residential internet service and Pro GigaEdge for business services are available in Miami Beach, Aventura, Bal Harbour, Bay Harbor Islands, Golden Beach, North Bay Village, Pinecrest, South Miami, Sunny Isles Beach, Surfside, Brickell, Wynwood, the Biscayne corridor and downtown Miami, the company said.

Its the first widely deployed Gigabit internet speeds in Miami Beach and surrounding communities, the company said. With the services, Atlantic Broadband’s fastest speeds will increase from 250 Mbps/20 Mbps to 1 Gigabit or 1,000 Mbps/50 Mbps. allowing customers to download a two-hour HD movie in 32 seconds. This allows faster speeds for multiple users simultaneously, at a time when more than 28 percent of U.S. households use 10 or more devices in the home on a daily basis, the company said.

Elizabeth Michelsen, Atlantic Broadband’s vice president and general manager for South Florida, also said that the company has completed the final phase of its $6.3 million FastForward Miami initiative. “In addition to Gigabit internet, this investment, which began in 2016, has also delivered significant HD channel additions, new Spanish-language and international channels, enhanced digital picture quality and sound, and greater reliability across our network,” she said.

GigaEdge service starts at $89.99/month for new residential Internet customers for the first year and rises to $109.99 the second year.

Internet service of 1 Gigabit or 2 Gigabit is becoming increasingly more available, with AT&T, which recently expanded its service, Comcast, Google Fiber and Hotwire.
