Justin Timberlake gets to return to the Super Bowl, and fans ask: What about Janet?
Back to the scene of the “crime.”
Fourteen years after so-called “Nipplegate,” Justin Timberlake will again perform during the Pepsi Super Bowl LII Halftime Show Feb. 4 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, the NFL announced Sunday.
Despite the fact that social media was not a thing back then, football and non-football fans alike may recall the 2004 controversial duet between the former ‘N Sync singer and Janet Jackson during Super Bowl LII half time in Houston.

Jackson had just rocked her classic hit “Rhythm Nation.” Then Timberlake joined the stage and the music stars sang a twerkilicious version of his “Rock Your Body.” After the last lyric, “Gonna have you naked, by the end of this song,” the former boy bander ripped a patch off her corset top, revealing Jackson’s breast with just a pastie over her nipple. She looked down, embarrassed, as if that wasn’t supposed to happen. But the risque stunt, soon to be labeled “Nipplegate,” was indeed planned, MTV, which produced the CBS show, said at the time.
Jackson received a lot of backlash for her so-called wardrobe malfunction and CBS was fined $550,000 by the Federal Communications Commission (which was later overturned). The famous man who was instrumental in causing the misfunction, not so much.
During an interview televised during NBC’s Sunday Night Football broadcast, Mike Tirico asked Timberlake said nothing untoward will happen this time around (the 36-year-old’s third time entertaining the SB crowd).
Regardless, can we say double standard?
Unless Justin Timberlake starts his set by introducing Janet Jackson with an apology and then continues watching quietly while she does 12 minutes of her catalog solo, the Super Bowl can keep this halftime show.

Twitter, of course, had something to say:
Some people want Timberlake to apologize. Others blame “white privilege” for allowing Timberlake to return, and not Jackson.
.@jtimberlake still ensuring white privilege remains in style in 2017. Meanwhile, Janet Jackson is still left in the cold.

My only request is that you don't perform any of the music inspired by her brother or any Black artist.
You love our culture, but disrespect our people. https://t.co/VTVWiGponv

Why is Justin Timberlake being invited to perform again when Janet Jackson is banned for life for something that was entirely his fault pic.twitter.com/5btOvDZDKq

Fittingly, the hashtag #justiceforjanet was trending on Monday. The pop icon has yet to comment.
