Greg Cote’s Passer Rankings: Brees wins season championship, Tannehill finishes tenth
The Saints’ Drew Brees wins the Miami Herald’s 2014 Passer Success System (PASS) season championship with 583.60 points, edging the Steelers’ Ben Roethlisberger by 4.50 points in the second-closest finish in the chart’s 17-year history. It is Brees’ fifth season title. The Dolphins’ Ryan Tannehill finishes in 10th place overall with a club-record 481.25 points. The Jets’ Geno Smith won Week 17 honors with 46.90 points. Our rankings are cumulative and use a simple formula unchanged since their inception in 1998, factoring accuracy, yardage, TD/interception ratio and team result. Most rating systems including the NFL’s and ESPN’s are complicated and percent based, allowing players who miss half a season to still win a title. Our rankings place a premium on consistently productive passers who avoid injury or benching. The final season PASS Top 40 for 2014:
