Greg Cote: Dolphins-Jets, UM bowl, Heat’s defense, UF-FSU
1. DOLPHINS
Miami visits Jets with playoff hopes on life support: The loss to Dallas putting Miami’s record at 4-6 meant Sunday’s game at the rival Jets is all but must-win. But the Dolphins and 49ers are the only teams 0-4 in their division, meaning Miami has been at its worst in the most crucial games.
2. HURRICANES
UM closes with win at Pitt, awaits bowl destination: Canes could earn a bid to the desired Pinstripe Bowl after winning at Pitt 29-24 to finish 8-4. Things are looking up. The downside to that? UM fans must adjust to the bizarre notion of feeling somewhat positive.
3. HEAT
Solid defense is helping keep the Heat hot: While NBA fans were focused on Golden State’s record 17-0 start, Miami’s defense, No. 1 in the Eastern Conference and No. 2 in the league, helped Miami win seven of its past nine games.
4. GATORS/NOLES
Florida hosts FSU in season-defining Saturday night: The state rivalry renewing in the Swamp was bigger for UF, which had to beat FSU and then Alabama in the SEC title game for a chance to move up into the College Football Playoff top four.
5. NCAA BASKETBALL
That moment we were the epicenter of the sport: UM rocketed to No. 15 but then lost at home to underdog Northeastern. Meanwhile, the Heat’s bayside arena featured No. 1 Kentucky. If you blinked you missed it but there was a magical moment this week when we were a college basketball town.
