Greg Cote’s hot topics of the week: Jeff Gordon on verge of perfect ending

Gordon farewell highlights Championship Sunday: Imagine. Jeff Gordon, set to retire, runs his final race and in it dramatically wins his fifth NASCAR title and first since 2001. Hey, that list of sports’ all-time perfect endings surely has room for one more, right?

Miami hosts Cowboys and return of Romo: Tony Romo plays Sunday for first time since Sept. 20 as “America’s Team” comes to town. It’s a rare visit — Dallas was last here in 20007 — and biggest crowd of the season is expected for what feels like an event as much as a game.

Whiteside’s Block Party highlight team’s early season: Young Heat sensation Hassan Whiteside leads the league (by a lot) with 50 blocked shots in Miami’s first 11 games, or 4.55 per game. No NBA player has had had a higher average over a full season since Hakeem Olajuwon (4.59) in 1989-90. Whiteside: The new Sultan of Swat!

UM hosts Georgia Tech in next-to-last, regular-season game: As UM hires search firm to help find Al Golden’s replacement, who says there’s nothing left for Canes to play for? Saturday vs. Georgia Tech and then this coming Friday at Pitt will determine if the Canes are invited to a bowl game you’re barely interested in.

Big signings, Puerto Rico event top busy week for Canes hoops: UM’s 2016 recruiting class added two big prizes this week, and Cnes reached the title game of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off Tournament. A thought: Can Jim Larrañaga coach the football team, too?
