Greg Cote’s Passer Ranking: Mariota wins week, but Brady extends overall season lead

Tennessee rookie Marcus Mariota wins Week 9 honors with a 52.55-point game in the Miami Herald’s Passer Success System (PASS) NFL quarterbacks rankings, leaping from 29th place to 24th overall. But New England’s Tom Brady continues to rule the Top 20 at No. 1 overall. Miami’s Ryan Tannehill rises to 10th place from 16th, taking advantage of others’ byes or lesser games. Our rankings, in their 18th season, are cumulative so players on a bye take a temporary hit that evens out over the course of the year. We use a simple formula unchanged since its inception in 1998, factoring accuracy, yardage, TD/interception ratio and team result. Most rating systems including the NFL’s and ESPN’s are complicated and percent based, allowing players who miss half a season to still win a title. Our rankings place a premium on consistently productive passers who avoid injury or benching. Find our updated Top 20 in this space every Sunday.
