Greg Cote’s Passer Rankings: Brees wins week, Manning back in season lead
The Saints’ Drew Brees wins his first weekly title of the year with 52.00 points, but the bigger story is Bronco Peyton Manning regaining the overall season lead for the first time since Week 2 in the Miami Herald’s Passer Success System (PASS) quarterback rakings. That’s significant because byes are finished, meaning the playing field is now level the rest of the way and shows Manning with a cushion of some 37 points. Dolphin Ryan Tannehill dips one spot to 11th place. Because are rankings are cumulative, players on a bye week took a temporary hit that evens out over course of season. The Herald rankings use a simple formula unchanged since its inception in 1998, factoring accuracy, yardage, TD/interception ratio and team result. Most rating systems including the NFL’s and ESPN’s are complicated and percentile based, allowing players who miss half a season to still win a title. Our rankings place a premium on consistently productive passers who avoid injury or benching. Find our updated season Top 20 in this space every Sunday:
