Greg Cote’s Hot Button topics: Joe Philbin, Al Golden fighting to save their jobs

1. DOLPHINS

Fins brace for Jets in London in crucial game: It’s Breakfast at Wembley as Dolphins “host” Jets in a game kicking off Sunday at 9:30 a.m. in the East. Cannot confirm speculation that, if Miami falls to 1-3 with a third consecutive loss, coach Joe Philbin may face deportation and be denied a return to the United States.

2. HURRICANES

UM tries to shake loss as FSU Week awaits: Thursday night’s loss at Cincinnati turns up heat on UM coach Al Golden as Canes prepare now to visit No. 11 Florida State in six days. Few coaches need a positive result more than Golden in Tallahassee — unless it’s Philbin in London.

3. HEAT

Miami plays first preseason game Sunday: The Heat hosts Charlotte on Sunday to open its NBA preseason. Unfortunately, center Hassan Whiteside hasn’t practiced yet because of a strained calf. Hmm. Didn’t he have about six months to rest and get healthy?

4. MARLINS

Another postseason starts without the Fish: With MLB playoffs set to begin this week, the Marlins’ season ends Sunday in Philly. Good news: Miami is above .500 since Aug. 31 and finished third in NL East. Bad news: For 21st time in 23 franchise years, Marlins will be watching playoffs on TV just like you.

5. PANTHERS

Cats six days from NHL season opener: Florida ended its preseason and now commences real hockey at home against Philadelphia on Saturday. Many experts see a playoff team. Considering the Panthers have been one of those only once in past 15 years, count the law of averages in Cats’ favor, at least.
