Greg Cote’s Passer Ranking: Patriots’ Brady wins Week 2, takes season’s top spot
New England’s Tom Brady scored a big 54.30-point game last week to win the Week 2 title and leap into the season lead in the Miami Herald’s 18th season of Passer Success System (PASS) quarterback rankings. The Dolphins’ Ryan Tannehill vaults seven spots into the No. 8 slot. Note: Tony Romo edged Philip Rivers for the Week 1 title, not vice versa as we’d reported last week because of a slight miscalculation since corrected. Our rankings are cumulative and use a simple formula unchanged since their inception in 1998, factoring accuracy, yardage, TD/interception ratio and team result. Most rating systems including the NFL’s and ESPN’s are complicated and percent based, allowing players who miss half a season to still win a title. Our rankings place a premium on consistently productive passers who avoid injury or benching. Watch for our updated Top 20 rankings in this space every Sunday.
