Nebraska brings first real challenge: Two programs with five national championships each tried to recapture their old mojo Saturday. It might have been arguable which team needed the win more, although I’m quite confident UM coach Al Golden and his legion of detractors would have dominated that debate.
Miami favored Sunday: Miami hopes to be more impressive Sunday against the underdog Jaguars than it was last week. Fins have started a season 2-0 on 19 occasions and made the playoffs 15 times. It was 15 out of 16 until the three most recent 2-0 starts (2002, ’10, ’13) missed the playoffs. Which leads the league in “trends that must end.”

Hockey’s back: Florida makes its preseason debut Sunday in Nashville and plays its first home exhibition Tuesday. ESPN says the Panthers “could be the surprise team in the Eastern Conference.” So it has come to that. When your team hasn’t won a playoff series since 1996, the expectation of its success is surprising.
Team eyes improvement as training camp nears: With training camp beginning next week, expect a big change in Media Day. Last year, every other question concerned LeBron leaving. This year only about a third of them will.
