Greg Cote’s Poll Dance: Was this World Cup a success for the U.S. team? Vote now
Yes or no, was this a successful men’s FIFA World Cup for the United States team?
(I know some of you wafflers out there prefer swimming in the gray middle, so our latest Poll Dance also offers an in-between option.)
Me, I say no -- not a successful World Cup for the American; see links below -- but this is your poll, not mine.
Arguments for a successful World Cup: U.S. finished 3-2 overall, winning two of three in the group stage (the only loss because they’d already clinched an advance and played mostly reserves), and then beating Bosnia & Herzegovina in the knockout round-of-32 before falling to Belgium in the round-of-16. It was the Americans’ first WC knockout win since 2002.
Arguments for not a successful World Cup: U.S. remains stuck in round-of-16 purgatory. Good enough to raise hopes every four years; not good enough to fulfill them. Rinse, repeat. This time, U.S. had a chance to break free and reach the quarterfinals, on home soil, against a beatable Belgium side, but got crushed 4-1 in a miserable finish. Mix in the huge controversy over Folarin Balogun’s reversed red card and it didn’t end a good look for the Americans.
How do you see the overall U.S. performance?
As always you may vote as many times as you like or until your fingers ache. Ready?Go!
