Greg Cote’s Poll Dance: How big a deal is FBI’s NBA gambling arrests? Vote now
Note to readers: The Poll Dance (and Hot Button Top 10) will have next Sunday Nov. 2 off. Both regular features will return on Sunday, Nov. 9. See you then!
The FBI’s investigation into illegal sports gambling has resulted in the NBA-related arrests of Portland Trail Blazer head coach Chauncey Billups and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier ... so far. Both have been put on in definite leave of absence from the sport. (It should be noted Rozier’s alleged involvement occurred when he played for Charlotte, not Miami.)
The probe is targeting massive mafia-linked sports rigging and gambling that includes basketball and poker. The NBA is taking it seriously and has pledged full cooperation.
It is serious because it calls into question the integrity and trust-worthiness of the NBA and, by extension, sports in general. It also is serious for what it portends, and for further arrests yet to come.
We may not know for awhile how much bigger this story may get, but, for now:
