The Dan Le Batard Show is losing a beloved member of its crew as Billy Gil, popular fixture in the “Shipping Container,” departs after 15 years.

The move, an amicable one, was officially announced Thursday morning as the show paid tribute to Gil. His last day is set for Friday.

Gil is departing to take a mostly off-air management position at Spotify and The Ringer, a rival sports and entertainment podcast network led by Bill Simmons. The Miami-based Le Batard Show and Simmons’ flagship podcast for The Ringer are competitors regularly both in the top five in Apple Podcasts’ national charts.

Gil became emotional when he privately broke the news of his pending departure to Le Batard, who fully supported Gil’s career-based decision.

On-air Thursday, Le Batard gave a tearful soliloquy to Gil, saying losing him left “both a sickness in my stomach and a warmth in my heart,” adding, “Someone I care about deeply is going, and also growing.”

The Le Batard Show also is dealing with the evolving involvement of popular sidekick Stugotz, who no longer is a regular on the daily show but has not left, though his appearances have been few lately.

In Gil, the show will lose the dry humor and anarchist/saboteur/dissenter quality of a cast member who has been a major, integral member of the show since 2010.

The Le Batard Show is the Monday through Friday flagship podcast of Meadowlark Media and also seen on YouTube and elsewhere. The show, which recently celebrated its 20th anniversary, left ESPN to become an independent enterprise in 2021.
