Greg Cote Show podcast: Play ball with Tim Kurkjian and legendary inventor of Strat-O-Matic baseball
The newest edition of the Greg Cote Show podcast, out now, is our “Welcome Back, Baseball!” episode and — in keeping with the sport’s older demographic — we are thrilled to welcome in two guests who are a combined 151 years old. (No, seriously).
Please listen anyway, because you know by now that if any podcast can make aging fun, it’s us! You needn’t even like baseball to enjoy it.
ESPN baseball expert and designated FOS (Friend Of the Show) Tim Kurkjian joins us to discuss the new MLB season, the Miami Marlins and fun, non-baseball stuff, too.
Then we are joined by the legend himself, Strat-O-Matic baseball game inventor Hal Richman! I am especially thrilled to finally meet the man who created the board game that meant so much to millions growing up, including myself, in my little corner bedroom at 1440.
This is our 17th episode of 2022 and our 108th overall and we welcome you back as always.
Highlights from Tim Kurkjian:
▪ His one surprise team in each league that will exceed expectations. (Are the Marlins his NL pick?).
▪ Tim on the new anti-sign stealing technology, the universal DH, and the shift on defense.
▪ The state of America’s Pastime, and why Tim can’t stop loving it anyway.
▪ Greg and Chris mention their upcoming Father vs. Son Olympics and ask Tim how he would fare against his young adult offspring.
▪ And what’s the angriest he has ever been during a pickup basketball game?
Highlights from Hal Richman:
▪ The audio was terrible. Sharp and tinny, as if he were calling in from Pluto. But Greg and Chris don’t have the heart to interject because Hal is 86 and, like I said, a legend.
▪ How an 11-year-old New York kid named Harold Richman came to dream up a baseball board game that would become a part of Americana.
▪ How Strat-O-Matic has reinvented itself to survive in the Internet/digital age (although the percentage of their sales still from the old-school board game might surprise you).
▪ How much Hal borrowed to start the company, and how long it was “a disaster” before taking off.
Oh, and Greg and Chris tease the GCS pod’s upcoming Cruiseship Episode.
Also hear what likely is the worst version of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” ever sung.
