Greg Cote’s passer rankings: Philip Rivers wins Week 2, Peyton Manning at top of season rankings
The Chargers’ Philip Rivers takes the Week 2 title while Bronco and defending champion Peyton Manning overtakes the season lead in the Miami Herald’s latest Passer Success System (PASS) quarterback rankings. The Dolphins’ Ryan Tannehill climbs six spots to 19th place. The Herald rankings use a simple formula unchanged since its inception in 1998, factoring accuracy, yardage, TD/interception ratio and team result. These are passer rankings and do not weigh a QB’s running ability. Most rating systems, including the NFL’s and ESPN’s, are complicated and percentile based, allowing players who miss half a season to still win a title. Our rankings are cumulative, placing a premium on passers who are consistently productive and avoid injury or benching. Watch for our Top 20 in this space every week:
